What should you know about traumatic brain injuries?

When you incur an injury in Louisiana, you may worry most about broken bones and sprains. However, sometimes the most dangerous wounds are the ones you cannot see, and it is important for you to recognize the signs of a traumatic brain injury so you can take action if you incur this wound.

You might sustain a traumatic brain injury in many ways. According to the Mayo Clinic, many people incur this wound after getting involved in a motor vehicle collision. You might also receive this wound as you play sports or if you fall down. People of all ages can incur this injury. However, you may be more likely to receive a brain injury if you are over the age of 60. People who are between 15 and 24 years old may also have an increased chance of incurring a brain injury if they hit their head.

If you incur a brain injury, you might experience a wide variety of symptoms. You may feel fatigued or have problems sleeping. Sometimes you might feel confused immediately after incurring this injury or you may lose consciousness. Additionally, you might feel dizzy or have a headache. If your brain injury is more severe, you might experience decreased coordination or slurred speech. In some situations, you may have cognitive or mental symptoms and feel anxious or sensitive to light.

Sometimes you may think you do not need to see a doctor if you feel fine after hitting your head. However, it is important to remember that you may not always experience symptoms immediately after the incident. Sometimes you may feel disoriented or dizzy when your injury occurs and then not notice other symptoms for a few days or even a few weeks. Because of this, it is a good idea to see your physician after you sustain a blow to your head, especially if you notice more symptoms as time passes.
